Nonnie’s Homemade Pizza

My Nonnie has been making this homemade pizza crust for years and I’m so excited to share it with you!

Friday nights have always been big pizza nights in my family. In elementary school, Friday’s was always called Pizza Fridays, as that’s what they would serve in the cafeteria. For Friday dinner, my Nonnie would make her homemade pizza, and there was no way I’d ever complaining about having pizza two times in one day.

Hers was always the best. It was baked to perfection, so crunchy on the bottom, and the crust was like a freaking pillow. She would always make one plain and the other loaded with whatever was left in the fridge. Whether it was chopped up ham, salami, grilled vegetables, or whatever was in her garden, it was always so amazing and fresh. It was one of my favorite traditions.

Here’s what you’ll need to make Nonnie’s Homemade Pizza:

  • warm water

  • all-purpose flour

  • instant yeast (rapid rise)

  • salt

  • olive oil

  • tomato sauce (or your favorite pizza base)

  • your favorite pizza toppings

In a large mixing bowl, pour in the flour, yeast packet, salt, and the warm water. Mix together first with a fork, and then start to knead it by hand in the bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a cloth and let sit for an hour. Remove the cover and punch the center of the dough, cover and let it rise for another hour. Flour your surface and empty the bowl of dough. Drizzle on the olive oil and continue to knead for another 3-5 minutes. Roll out the dough into a 14” round circle. Place your dough on your baking sheet, baking stone, or pizza sheet. Cover the dough with your sauce or pizza base and bake for 15 minutes. Remove and lay on your toppings. Bake for another 15 minutes. Slice & enjoy!
