Vegan Bean Burgers

mains / vegan / meat free / dairy free / quick meals

Grilling season just got a whole lot better with these Vegan Bean Burgers!

I’m been trying to cut my red meat intake recently, and the thought if missing out on burgers during grilling season was sending me into a spiral. I love a good burger with ALL the toppings, but didn’t want to miss out! I thought doing a black bean burger was a pretty typical way to go, so instead I’ve combined black beans and kidney beans to make this Vegan Bean Burger.

These are great to make on the grill or just on the stove. This recipe makes about 4 very decent size patties that will leave you feeling so satisfied afterwards.

Here’s what you’ll need to make these Vegan Bean Burgers:

  • black beans

  • red kidney beans

  • sauted yellow onion

  • cumin

  • paprika

  • garlic powder

  • salt

  • pepper

  • panko breadcrumbs

  • olive oil

These are the perfect vegan substitute for your staple grilling recipe this summer. Mash the beans with the cooked onions and seasonings and form your patties. Then all that’s left to do is cook, assemble & eat!

Vegan Bean Burgers

(serves 4)

ingredients:

  • 1 can black beans

  • 1 can red kidney beans

  • 1/2 large yellow onion, sautéed

  • 1 tsp cumin

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp pepper

  • 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs

  • 1 tsp + 1 tbsp olive oil

directions:

  1. sauté the yellow onions in 1 tsp olive oil until soft.

  2. add the black beans and kidney beans to a bowl and start to mash them with a potato masher or fork. you can leave some whole beans in there, but mash about 85% of the beans.

  3. add in the onions, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and panko. stir everything together until combined well.

  4. form 4 large patties in your hand and you’re ready to cook!

  5. if cooking on the stove, heat the 1 tbsp of olive oil and lay the patties down when the oil starts to get hot. cook on medium low heat for about 7 minutes on each side. if grilling, grease a piece of aluminum foil to lay the burgers onto, not directly on the grill. cook on low heat for 7 minutes each side.
